Happy New Year!

I’m back at my craft desk today after a nice break over Christmas and New Years.  I am visiting a close friend who has had a new baby next week so wanted to make a special card.  

I have seen punch out baby drawer cards all over the Internet and have been itching to make one.  So here’s my version:

  
I used a top gold card blank (cut an A4 sheet in half vertically at 10.5cm) and then cut the shape from the bottom with 2 cuts of the curly label punch.  The drawers are 8cm x 2cm and embossed with my spotty folder for added texture.  The top of the drawers is 11cm x roughly 1.5cm (I just used up a scrap). 

I used Sahara Sand card stock and sponged the edges with Blushing Bride. 

The images are from the Baby Bundle set and the sentiment is from Nursery Necessities (both retired Stampin’ Up! but there are lots of cute baby sets in the current catalogue that would work just as well). 

I cut out all the shapes.   One tip for cutting really tiny shapes like the curve of the coat hanger – if you have a marker the same colour as your card stock just colour around so it’s not obvious if you leave a bit for added strength:

  
It’s a good idea to position the clothes etc before you stick down the drawers – I stuck a few behind the drawers:

  
(I used dimensionals to stick on the drawers and mini glue dots for the fiddly little cut outs).

Over the past week I’ve been showing you some of the range of cards I’ve made using a pile of coloured in images I have had lying around.  You’ll probably be pleased to here that this is the last post I plan on doing on this topic!

One of the images I coloured in multiples of was this cute image from a retired Stampin’ Up! stamp set called Give a Gift.

They are all a bit different.  I’ve used up quite a lot of spare DSP or sheets of card stock I’d embossed but not yet figured out what to do with.

I hope you can see that this is a ‘cut out’ card – and the image is actually stuck on the inside of the card with a punched shape cut out of the front of the card.   This photo gives you a better idea:

This is such a simple and effective technique you can use it for pretty much any stamp or imagine that has a matching punch.    If you’d like to know how I made this card, come back tomorrow and I’ll show you!

Hello

The past few days I’ve been showing you some pictures of some of the cards I made with my stash of coloured-in images.

Today I want to show you one of my favourite set of cards I’ve made in a long time. Such a cute baby card (if I do say so myself!)

I’d coloured in a whole heap of small imaged from a retired Stampin’ Up! set called Baby Bundle.  You could make a similar card from the current A Fitting Occasion set, or any other set with cute small images  (PS the images in the Baby Tees jumbo wheel are also gorgeous and great for colouring in).

I cut out the coloured image with my 1 1/4 inch circle punch.  The matted circle was cut from the 1 3/8 inch circle punch.  I like this as it gives just a hint of background colour, but you could use your 1 3/4 inch circle if you like more background.

The white cardstock layer was run through the Big Shot with the Perfect Polka Dots embossing folder.

I then used my Scallop Edge border to cut along the edge – I thought the card needed a bit of balance on the right and I love how the scallop edge turned out. This photo gives a better idea of what I did (sorry it’s a bit grey)

Hello!

Yesterday I showed you just some of the ridiculous number of pages of coloured-in stamped images I had lying around my office from a time when I was unwell earlier in the year.    In the next few blog posts, I’ll show you what I did with them all!

I figured while I was using up my colouring-in, I should probably use up some of my giant stash of retired Stampin’ Up! designer series paper (DSP) as well as various packets of card stock, corrugated cardboard etc I’ve been hoarding since one of my many visits to a local $2 shop!

I probably had almost a whole watercolour sheet of Stampin’ Up’s Two by Two stamp.

My Mum’s op shop got a donation of a very large number of these cards!

Another baby card

One of the saddest things for me about the end of the 2012-13 Stampin’ Up! catalogue was the retirement of the Two by Two stamp.  I loved that stamp for making baby cards!

There is another gorgeous baby one to replace it though (Fishin’ Around on p58 of the new catalogue).  Stay tuned – I may have to buy that one!

I wanted to show you a couple of the cards I made using Two by Two:

IMG_1400IMG_1399As well as being a super cute stamp, this is a good example of how a single image in a frame can work really well as a feature.

I used my Labels collection framelits to cut the background shapes.   The pink card is a good example of how you can use these framelits to make borders for added depth.

My favourite baby card

One of my favourite things to make is a card for a new baby.   Today I wanted to show you my favourite card to make of all time – a little “onesie” baby card.

It might look a little tricky, but it’s really quite straightforward once you get the hang of it.   The main tools you’ll need here are a craft knife and ruler and/or straight hands with scissors!, a scallop punch and a circle punch that is just slightly smaller.   I’ve used the Stampin’ Up! 1 3/4″ scallop circle punch and 1 3/8″ circle punch.

I’d love to say I came up with this idea all by myself – but I used a tutorial kindly shared by Stampin’ Up! demonstrator Becky Jensen.    This is such a great tutorial – step by step instructions with pictures of each step.

The only changes I’ve made to Becky’s basic design (which is in inches) are:

  • I’ve used standard Australian sized card (10.5 x 14.8 cm)
  • I’ve cut the arms at 4.5cm
  • I cut small strips of scrap designer series paper to decorate the arms instead of using the scallop edge punch for the arms.
    I have made these cards using the scallop edge punch to decorate the arms as well (it matches the scallops at the neck and legs) but I must have given them away so don’t have any pictures.  I’ll have to make some more!

Once you’ve made a few of these, you will probably feel you can use your trimmer to cut the section out to make the arms and body (ie, cut in 4.5cm and then cut down to the leg).  Once you master that, these cards are ridiculously quick to make.

These are so much fun to make I always seem to make them in batches.  These cards are another good way to use up little scraps of paper you don’t want to throw out.
