Hi

Today I want to show you an idea I had for making a gift boxed set of cards using a plastic container that some salad leaves came in.

When I was getting my rocket leaves out of the fridge a few days ago, I thought that the container would be just right to hold some square cards.

I thought while I was in the upcycling/recycling mood, I should also use up some of my spare paper stash.  So I grabbed some old Bravo Burgundy (Stampin’ Up!) card stock and matching designer series paper, some punches and a pile of paper doilies I had in my “random craft stuff” box, and here’s what I came up with:

It was a layering job of DSP and card stock. I used my 2 3/8 inch scallop circle punch and the 1 3/4 and 1 3/8 inch circle punches.   The “For You” sentiment is from the Chalk Talk stamp set.

I then decorated the plastic container to match the cards.

A quick tag using the scallop tag topper punch, some matching ribbon and voila!

I made this for someone very special to me who is forever sending cards to other people, so hopefully she enjoyed receiving some cards of her own.

Thanks for reading.

Hello

Sorry I haven’t posted to my blog in a while.  I’ve been pretty busy with not much time for crafting.   I finally got a chance to make some stuff recently though, so I will show you a few things over the next little while.

It is my little boy’s 5th birthday today (where did that time go?!?) and, like seemingly most children, he is currently quite obsessed with the movie Frozen.   So I decided to tackle Olaf the snowman for his birthday card.   Here is the end result:

Olaf the Snowman card (Frozen)

The card background is on Coastal Cabana card stock with some (retired) Winter Frost designer series paper.  I used my dazzling details glitter to add some sparkly snowflakes in the background.  I wrote the greeting (“I like warm hugs” with my Coastal Cabana Stampin’ Write marker and punched it out with the word window punch.  I used the modern label punch to do the background, also in Coastal Cabana.  I put a couple of dots of dazzling details glitter on either side of the greeting for some extra sparkle.

Here’s how I made Olaf (all pieces punched from Whisper White unless otherwise specified):

The base of the snowman – 1 3/4 inch circle punch, with approximately 1/2 cm cut off the bottom

The middle of the snowman – 1 3/8 inch circle punch, with approximately 1/4 cm cut off the bottom

Head – the large oval punch

Feet – the two large circles from the owl builder punch

Buttons – the middle sized circles from the owl builder punch (Basic Black)

Arms – 2 x branches from the bird builder punch (Chocolate Chip).  I thought about trimming the leaves down to make the arms look slightly more twig like, but I decided that was far too much effort!)

Mouth – oval punch (cut off about 1/3 from the top)

Teeth – the base of the jewellery tag punch (retired).  If you don’t have this punch you could easily cut a small rectangle freehand.

Nose – I punched a 1 inch circle punch and then cut it down to an oval freehand

Nose – the candle from the cupcake builder punch (I also thought about using the candle from the same punch, I think either would work) (Tangerine Tango)

Eyes – I glued on some goggly eyes with some mini glue dots.

I drew on the eyebrows with a black texta and have since been informed by Mr 5 that I should have drawn on his hair as well.   Feedback was noted, hair has now been drawn on (although I don’t have a picture of that!).

Apart from the minor criticism about my attention to hair detail, Olaf was received with much excitement today!

Thanks for reading, and I’ll try not to be so long between posts next time

Star Wars punch art Yoda birthday card

Yesterday I mentioned a card I’d made I was just a little bit excited about.   This is it – a Star Wars Yoda card for my Star Wars obsessed brother.

Yoda punch art card I got the basic idea from this post on a blog called Little Miss Scrappy.

It took me a while to figure out all the bits and pieces so I thought I’d share the ‘card menu’ with you in case you want to make it yourself.   I used a retired colour called Certainly Celery for Yoda’s body as I have so much of it still, but there are lots of greens in the current Stampin’ Up! catalogue that would work well.

Yoda

Yoda punch art

Head – 1 3/8 inch circle punch.  It is hard to see from the picture, but I used my bone folder to make score lines in the top half of the circle for his wrinkles.

Ears – 2 of the wings from the bird punch in Certainly Celery and 2 wings from Chocolate Chip

Eyes – I used 2 of the medium sized circles from the owl builder punch in Whisper White and 2 of the smallest sized circles in Chocolate Chip.  I also cut one of the medium sized circles in Certainly Celery and cut it in half to make the eyelids.

Mouth – I drew this on with my Chocolate Chip Stampin’ Write marker.

Body – I used a retired extra large tag punch in Crumb Cake (the shape of the top of the tag gives him shoulders).     The ticket duo builder punch, an oval punch or a trimmed off decorative label punch from the current catalogue could also work well.  You could also just cut out a rectangle!

Belt – I used a Word Window punch in Basic Black and trimmed off the ends to fit.

Robe – I cut a tag punch out of Very Vanilla and cut it in half lengthwise.  I then folded each piece in half lengthwise to make the flaps of his robe.  I had to trim the folded part just slightly to make it perfectly match the shoulder line.   The arms of the robe are a word window punch cut in half, with the rounded edges glued behind the main part of the robe.

Hands and feet – I used the feet from the owl in the owl builder punch.  Tip:  don’t try and cut and glue the teeny tiny owl feet!  You will drive yourself mad!   Far better to cut out an owl body and use the body as somewhere to stick the glue on and hide the body behind Yoda’s robe.

Light saber – I used the end of a piece cut from the (retired) jewellery tag punch in Basic Black for the handle.  You could equally use the end of a word window punch.   I used a word window punch in Coastal Cabana for the ‘sword’ part, but sponged it in Old Olive and silver ink to make it look like it was glowing.

Background

I tore a piece of Soft Suede card stock to look like the rough ground.   I used my computer and printer to print the greeting on a piece of Bashful Blue card stock (this is also retired – I am using up my stash!) Soft Sky in the current catalogue would look just as good.

I hope you enjoy making one of these if you have a Star Wars fan in your life!

best of 25 years, cards, For You flower, Stampin Up

Hello

For those of you that follow Stampin’ Up!, you would know that it is their 25th anniversary this year.  As part of their birthday celebrations, they are bringing back some of the most popular stamps from the past 25 years.    I am very pleased with the November stamps, as they include one of my favourite stamps from the past few years – the one I call the For You flower (I’m not sure if it has a real name!).

Here is a card I made last year using this stamp:

For You flower card

One of the reasons I love this stamp so much is that it coordinates with the scallop punch and the 1 3/8 ” circle punch.

When I found this card, I also realised I had some left overs of the stripy paper.   And ta da – I made a matching envelope with my brand spanking envelope board punch!!!

Envelope with Envelope Board PunchI can’t tell you how excited I am by this envelope board punch.   I have been checking the blogosphere and already have lots of ideas I want to try out – oh, and making envelopes with it of course!

Thanks for reading

baby cards, cards, Colouring in, cute

Hello

The past few days I’ve been showing you some pictures of some of the cards I made with my stash of coloured-in images.

Today I want to show you one of my favourite set of cards I’ve made in a long time. Such a cute baby card (if I do say so myself!)

I’d coloured in a whole heap of small imaged from a retired Stampin’ Up! set called Baby Bundle.  You could make a similar card from the current A Fitting Occasion set, or any other set with cute small images  (PS the images in the Baby Tees jumbo wheel are also gorgeous and great for colouring in).

IMAG0097

I cut out the coloured image with my 1 1/4 inch circle punch.  The matted circle was cut from the 1 3/8 inch circle punch.  I like this as it gives just a hint of background colour, but you could use your 1 3/4 inch circle if you like more background.

The white cardstock layer was run through the Big Shot with the Perfect Polka Dots embossing folder.

I then used my Scallop Edge border to cut along the edge – I thought the card needed a bit of balance on the right and I love how the scallop edge turned out. This photo gives a better idea of what I did (sorry it’s a bit grey)

Here are some more:

Gorgeous baby card

IMAG0096

IMAG0098I’m so in love with these cards I almost couldn’t bring myself to give them away!  (I must confess I’ve kept quite a few.  I need some people to have babies so I can use them!)

Simple scallop frame with punches

Punches, tutorial

Yesterday I showed you my favourite baby card to make.   One of the clever tricks involved in making that card is the scallop ‘lace’ around the neck and legs of the jump suit.

I wanted to show you step by step how to do this – as it is a really good trick for making a scallop border as well.    To make these ones, I used the Stampin’ Up!  1 3/4″ scallop and 1 3/8″ circles punches.   You could use any size punches though, as long as the circle punch is slightly smaller than the scallop punch.

Step 1:  Punch a circle, leaving enough room around the edges for the border

Step 2: position your scallop punch around the punched out circle to make an even border

photo-2

Punch – and voila!   A gorgeous little scallop border.

photo-3

If you were going to make the baby onesie card, you would need to cut the border roughly in half (always measure against the card!) to stick around the ‘leg holes’ or ‘neck hole’.

I like this technique though as it also makes a really nice border for a stamped image. It can also make a cute flower.

Such a simple technique, but really effective.

Enjoy!!

My favourite baby card

One of my favourite things to make is a card for a new baby.   Today I wanted to show you my favourite card to make of all time – a little “onesie” baby card.

IMG_1402

It might look a little tricky, but it’s really quite straightforward once you get the hang of it.   The main tools you’ll need here are a craft knife and ruler and/or straight hands with scissors!, a scallop punch and a circle punch that is just slightly smaller.   I’ve used the Stampin’ Up! 1 3/4″ scallop circle punch and 1 3/8″ circle punch.

I’d love to say I came up with this idea all by myself – but I used a tutorial kindly shared by Stampin’ Up! demonstrator Becky Jensen.    This is such a great tutorial – step by step instructions with pictures of each step.

The only changes I’ve made to Becky’s basic design (which is in inches) are:

  • I’ve used standard Australian sized card (10.5 x 14.8 cm)
  • I’ve cut the arms at 4.5cm
  • I cut small strips of scrap designer series paper to decorate the arms instead of using the scallop edge punch for the arms.
I have made these cards using the scallop edge punch to decorate the arms as well (it matches the scallops at the neck and legs) but I must have given them away so don’t have any pictures.  I’ll have to make some more!

Once you’ve made a few of these, you will probably feel you can use your trimmer to cut the section out to make the arms and body (ie, cut in 4.5cm and then cut down to the leg).  Once you master that, these cards are ridiculously quick to make.

These are so much fun to make I always seem to make them in batches.  These cards are another good way to use up little scraps of paper you don’t want to throw out.

Here are a few more pictures:

Here are some packaged up for sale.  They look so cute all lined up together!

I hope you enjoy making one of these cards next time you have a new arrival to celebrate!
