Hi!

I mentioned in a blog post the other day that I love to look at ordinary, every day things and figure out how to make them prettier.   The other day I was in my kitchen rinsing out some plastic containers that berries and cherry tomatoes had been stored in, when it occurred to me that they would probably make perfect little gift card holders?  And they did!

Yesterday I showed you some gift cards I made with the Stampin’ Up! blossom punch:

Blossom Punch gift card setHere’s what the cards looked like packaged up in a plastic cherry tomato container!

Upcycled tomato container gift card holderYou can see a little better on an angle:

Check out these little blueberry containers!  They hold 4 cards plus envelopes.

Upcycled berry container gift card setI decorated the inside and the top of the containers so they look really cute inside and out:

Now to find the lucky recipients of some little gift card packs … 🙂

Hi

The other day I had an idea for a gift card set which is just a little bit genius (if I do say so myself!!!).   I’ll show you that idea tomorrow.

But first I needed some gift cards …  so, it was off to my craft desk to make some!    I have been wanting to use my pack of Garden Party DSP from the current Stampin’ UP! catalogue for months so I started with that for inspiration.   I pulled out my Blossom Punch and some buttons, and voila!!  Here are some of the cards I made:

3D projects, gift cards, tea bag gifts

Hello.  Thanks for dropping by!

Yesterday I showed you a little folder I made to give away some photos to some family members.    Today I want to show you something else I’ve made previously using a similar idea – a little tea bag holder you can give to someone as a ‘get well’ gift, welcome to the neighbourhood card etc.   My Mum liked the idea of having some of these at the op shop where she volunteers for people who come in for a chat.

Tea bag holders

These are made using a very similar concept as yesterday’s folders.   You use a piece of card stock, fold it up to make a pouch to hold the tea bags and glue the sides of the folded up piece so they don’t fall out.    I spent a little more time decorating these using strips of DSP and ribbon to tie them closed.   The tea cup image here is  a retired Stampin’ Up! a la carte stamp called Tiny Teacup, but there are lots of beautiful images in the current Tea Party set which would look equally good (or probably better, I have had my eye on that set for ages!)

This size would be ideal for gift cards as well.

Enjoy!

Caro

40th birthday party, favourite things, gift cards, gift tag, gift wrapping

One of my favourite things to do is wrap a present.  I don’t know why, but something about choosing colours and playing with ribbon is very therapeutic.   And we are all about making things pretty here at Caro’s Pretty Things!

We recently went to a close friend’s 40th birthday party.   He is just a little bit into red wine (understatement of the year!) so of course we bought him a very nice bottle of red wine for his present.

Here’s the present all wrapped up.

photo-5I used my Labels collection framelits for the base of the gift tag and printed out an image ‘Keep Calm and Drink Red Wine’ I found on the web.   This was tied on with Bravo Burgundy ribbon from Stampin’ Up! (the same colour as the die cut label) – which seemed rather appropriate given the gift.

Hopefully he’ll enjoy the wine as much as I enjoyed wrapping it!

Simple – but stylish – gift giving

Hello!  Thanks for stopping by my blog.

Yesterday I showed you some cards I made using the Stampin’ Up! full heart punch.  I mentioned that you shouldn’t throw away the spare punched heart – and here’s why not.

After making the cards yesterday I needed a quick and simple gift wrapping idea to go with the cards.   Here’s a simple idea for a gift tag:

photo-5I used the cut out from the heart punch and another cut out butterfly on top (see how the wings aren’t fully stuck down to make it look like it’s flying?)   A little faux pearl and I think it looks perfect for a little girl’s present.

The tag is a mailing tag I got at Officeworks – you can get a box of 100.  I normally like making my own tags, but sometimes when you’re in a hurry this is a pretty good alternative!

I also have a stash of blank gift bags I get from $2 shops for this kind of occasion.    A few punches from card stock and scraps of pretty paper and you’ve got a lovely gift with virtually no effort.

photo-3

photo-4I think they look gorgeous (if I do say so myself!) – and certainly they don’t look the result of 2 minute’s effort.

If you don’t have any punches, you can still make a really pretty gift bag just by cutting pieces of paper to cover the front of the bag.

Have a look at some bags I made for my son’s daycare teachers last Christmas.  The designs were just cut out with scissors from some Stampin’ Up! designer series paper.

Again, simple and easy – but really nice to receive 🙂

gift cards

Hi

I hope you saw my post on Thursday showing you how to make gift card holders out of envelopes.   These are some of my favourite things to make – so quick and easy but always get a ‘wow’ from the person who receives them.

I mentioned in the post I also like to make them out of florals, spots, stripes etc.   I was just sorting through some photos and found a couple of some gift cards I made a year or so ago so thought I’d share them too.

Enjoy!

Gift card holders using envelopes and scraps

You may be sensing a theme here – but yes, here is another post on how I’ve been using up scrap pieces of DSP I can’t bring myself to throw away.

Today’s idea is a gift card holder made out of an envelope.   I’ve used the Stampin Up Whisper White C6 envelopes here as they are nice and sturdy with a good sized flap.  You could adapt the basic design to suit any envelope though.

20121206_143756I can’t remember where I got the original idea for this – somewhere on the internet I’m sure!  It is really simple though and very effective for using up small bits of coordinating DSP.

Step 1: Take a envelope and fold it in half bringing the 2 short sides together.  Score along the fold line to make a nice sharp crease.   Then open it out again.

Step 2: Cut down the fold line on the envelope flap.  I find it’s easier to make 2 cuts about 1mm apart – so you basically make a wide cut along the crease and discard the 1mm along the crease line.

Step 3: Lick, fold down and seal one half of the envelope.    The other half will be the pouch for your gift card.   These pictures show how it will look when decorated.

20121206_143635

20121206_143650

Step 4: Decorate!!!   I also like to add a belly band made of a strip of DSP and some scallop circle/circle punches.

20121206_143826

20121206_143704

If you want to go the extra step it is also quite cute to use tag punches and (more!) scraps of DSP to make little name tags/gift cards.   You could also use the Stampin Up jewellery punch.

20121209_220521

I’ve also made these gift card holders for birthdays out of floral DSP for pretty feminine gift card holders,  out of stripes for masculine gifts and fun spots with cute animal stamps for kids and babies.

UPDATED 26/5 – I found some pictures of some gift card holders I’ve made out of pretty florals.

I always feel slightly guilty in giving a gift card rather than a personalised present, but making a nice personalised gift card holder makes me feel much better!

I hope you enjoy making these – they are so easy but really effective.   If any of the instructions aren’t clear leave me a comment and I’ll try and answer.

Thanks for reading 🙂

Pinwheel die cards and gift tags

My last post confessed to a slightly unhealthy obsession with the Stampin’ Up! pinwheel die.    I wanted to use this post to show you how I’ve been using up some of my scrap paper with the pinwheel die and the odd toothpick.

photo-3In this card I’ve used some Tangerine Tango card stock, a scrap of paper from some Sycamore Street DSP and Tangerine Tango ribbon from the recent Sale-a-bration promotion, plus an Itty Bitty Banner stamped and cut out with the matching framelit.    The toothpick is stuck on the back of the pinwheel using a Glue Dot and the pinwheel is stuck to the Whisper White card stock using a dimensional.

Here’s a similar card with 3 pinwheels:

photo-7

And a little 7cm x 7cm matching love note I used to go with the card when I gift wrapped the present for the recipient of the card:

photo-6

I think I like the ‘single pinwheel’ design best – what do you think?

Thanks for reading 🙂

Using up some scrap paper

3/4 circle punch, blossom punch, cards, gift cards, love notes

If you’re anything like me, you probably have a ton of left over paper lying around that is too pretty to throw away, but you’re also not quite sure what to do with?

I’ve recently started donating some of my extra paper to my son’s daycare – the kids love using it in their craft and I’m sure they get more happiness out of using it than having it stashed away in my stash!

I’ve also started hunting around for ways to use up small bits of paper in my crafting.    One really simple idea is these small gift cards made out of some scrap paper and the Stampin Up blossom punch.

Blossomflower1

I made a 7 cm x 7 cm card in Whisper White and punched a blossom shape out of some retired Stampin Up designer series paper (DSP).   I then used my 3/4 inch circle punch and a spare button I had lying around to make the centre of a flower.

Another variation is to us a scrap of DSP (I used 6 cm x 6 cm) and overlay with a white punched blossom image.    A small circle of DSP in the middle (3/4 or 1 inch punches work best) and you’re done.  You could add a button or another punched flower in the middle to give it some extra dimension.

Blossomflower2

Very simple, but I think they are quite effective.  What do you think?

I’ll try to always put the ‘ingredients’ for any cards at the bottom of a post.  If you would like to buy any of the products I use on the blog, please email me at caroprettythings@gmail.com
