Hello

I don’t know how many times I’ve started a blog post by apologising for the length of time it’s been since I last posted, but here I go again!  Life just gets busy!

Today I wanted to show you some wedding cards I made for a dear friend’s wedding a few months ago.   This is a snippet of their wedding invitation, which inspired me to make not one, but three cards for their wedding!

I tried to use their design as inspiration, and the colours they chose were uncannily similar to Stampin’ Up!’s Night of Navy and Very Vanilla.

This card actually used a Christmas embossing folder tipped on its side.  You’d have to look very closely to see the Christmas details at what should be the top!  Again, some sponging and pearl details set it off.

This was my son’s favourite!  He loved the heart shaped cup and shaking the card to make a sound with all the little cut out hearts with the small heart punch.

I loved them all, but ended up using the gate fold card as my card to the happy couple.  My son insisted on the shaker card being from him, and my parents ended up using the other card.  So none of them went to waste!

Hello

Sorry I haven’t posted to my blog in a while.  I’ve been pretty busy with not much time for crafting.   I finally got a chance to make some stuff recently though, so I will show you a few things over the next little while.

It is my little boy’s 5th birthday today (where did that time go?!?) and, like seemingly most children, he is currently quite obsessed with the movie Frozen.   So I decided to tackle Olaf the snowman for his birthday card.   Here is the end result:

The card background is on Coastal Cabana card stock with some (retired) Winter Frost designer series paper.  I used my dazzling details glitter to add some sparkly snowflakes in the background.  I wrote the greeting (“I like warm hugs” with my Coastal Cabana Stampin’ Write marker and punched it out with the word window punch.  I used the modern label punch to do the background, also in Coastal Cabana.  I put a couple of dots of dazzling details glitter on either side of the greeting for some extra sparkle.

Here’s how I made Olaf (all pieces punched from Whisper White unless otherwise specified):

The base of the snowman – 1 3/4 inch circle punch, with approximately 1/2 cm cut off the bottom

The middle of the snowman – 1 3/8 inch circle punch, with approximately 1/4 cm cut off the bottom

Head – the large oval punch

Feet – the two large circles from the owl builder punch

Buttons – the middle sized circles from the owl builder punch (Basic Black)

Arms – 2 x branches from the bird builder punch (Chocolate Chip).  I thought about trimming the leaves down to make the arms look slightly more twig like, but I decided that was far too much effort!)

Mouth – oval punch (cut off about 1/3 from the top)

Teeth – the base of the jewellery tag punch (retired).  If you don’t have this punch you could easily cut a small rectangle freehand.

Nose – I punched a 1 inch circle punch and then cut it down to an oval freehand

Nose – the candle from the cupcake builder punch (I also thought about using the candle from the same punch, I think either would work) (Tangerine Tango)

Eyes – I glued on some goggly eyes with some mini glue dots.

I drew on the eyebrows with a black texta and have since been informed by Mr 5 that I should have drawn on his hair as well.   Feedback was noted, hair has now been drawn on (although I don’t have a picture of that!).

Apart from the minor criticism about my attention to hair detail, Olaf was received with much excitement today!

Christmas place mats

The last few days I’ve shown you some of the decorations I made for our recent Christmas in July (in August!) celebration with some friends.  Today I wanted to show you some place mats I made:

I used the Happy Hour stamp set from Stampin’ Up! for the details.  I used a gold Versamark ink pad for the drink cups.  I hand cut the candy cane and stuck it on the drink.  I used my Stampin’ Write markers (Garden Green and Riding Hood Red) to colour the holly stamp before stamping it on the side of the glass.   Here’s a close up of the images:

20130815_165235 I used an A4 piece of card stock as the red backing (using up some retired Riding Hood Red card stock) and a white piece of A4 where I’d cut 2cm off one long and one short side (ie, to get a 1cm border around all 4 sides).   I then stuck the white and red card together and ran them through a laminator to make the place mat.   They looked really cute all lined up together!

Here’s a picture of the table with all the decorations on it:

photo-8Did you notice the stars in the soup bowls?  We used a star cookie cutter to make toast stars to float on top of the soup.   (The reverse pieces of bread with star holes were fun to fill with scrambled eggs for brunch the next day!)

I had a great time making all the decorations and we had such a fun dinner 🙂

Gift card holders using envelopes and scraps

You may be sensing a theme here – but yes, here is another post on how I’ve been using up scrap pieces of DSP I can’t bring myself to throw away.

Today’s idea is a gift card holder made out of an envelope.   I’ve used the Stampin Up Whisper White C6 envelopes here as they are nice and sturdy with a good sized flap.  You could adapt the basic design to suit any envelope though.

20121206_143756I can’t remember where I got the original idea for this – somewhere on the internet I’m sure!  It is really simple though and very effective for using up small bits of coordinating DSP.

Step 1: Take a envelope and fold it in half bringing the 2 short sides together.  Score along the fold line to make a nice sharp crease.   Then open it out again.

Step 2: Cut down the fold line on the envelope flap.  I find it’s easier to make 2 cuts about 1mm apart – so you basically make a wide cut along the crease and discard the 1mm along the crease line.

Step 3: Lick, fold down and seal one half of the envelope.    The other half will be the pouch for your gift card.   These pictures show how it will look when decorated.

Step 4: Decorate!!!   I also like to add a belly band made of a strip of DSP and some scallop circle/circle punches.

If you want to go the extra step it is also quite cute to use tag punches and (more!) scraps of DSP to make little name tags/gift cards.   You could also use the Stampin Up jewellery punch.

I’ve also made these gift card holders for birthdays out of floral DSP for pretty feminine gift card holders,  out of stripes for masculine gifts and fun spots with cute animal stamps for kids and babies.

UPDATED 26/5 – I found some pictures of some gift card holders I’ve made out of pretty florals.

I always feel slightly guilty in giving a gift card rather than a personalised present, but making a nice personalised gift card holder makes me feel much better!

Pinwheel die cards and gift tags

My last post confessed to a slightly unhealthy obsession with the Stampin’ Up! pinwheel die.    I wanted to use this post to show you how I’ve been using up some of my scrap paper with the pinwheel die and the odd toothpick.

photo-3In this card I’ve used some Tangerine Tango card stock, a scrap of paper from some Sycamore Street DSP and Tangerine Tango ribbon from the recent Sale-a-bration promotion, plus an Itty Bitty Banner stamped and cut out with the matching framelit.    The toothpick is stuck on the back of the pinwheel using a Glue Dot and the pinwheel is stuck to the Whisper White card stock using a dimensional.

Here’s a similar card with 3 pinwheels:

And a little 7cm x 7cm matching love note I used to go with the card when I gift wrapped the present for the recipient of the card:

Using up scraps – Stampin Up pinwheel die

You may know I’ve been on a mission to use up all my bits and pieces of DSP I’ve been hoarding for years.   One of my favourite ways at the moment is the Sizzlets Pinwheel die from the current Stampin’ Up! Seasonal Catalogue.   At just $8.95 I have to confess to buying two – so I can make 2 pinwheels at the same time.   One just wasn’t enough!

And why would it be when just like magic you can take a bag of old paper scraps …

If you Google “stampin up pinwheel die tutorial” you will see lots of YouTube videos shared by kind demonstrators who will show you how to put the dies together to make the pinwheel.

In summary though – fold in each corner and secure in the middle with a brad – too easy!

Pop up rugby themed birthday party invitations

My 3 year old son is obsessed with rugby union.  And I mean obsessed.  Instead of a story, he wants me to read him the Brumbies rugby season guide most nights.    And for his birthday party he wants a – you guessed it! – rugby themed birthday party, with rugby themed invitations.

After much thought, I came up with a pop-up rugby themed birthday party invitation for my little rugby obsessed munchkin.    I thought I would share the steps in case anyone else needs to come up with a football related card or invitation anytime soon.

I made a C6 sized card blank in Stampin Up! Night of Navy, which is pretty close to the Brumbies team colours of navy, white and yellow.   I cut and pasted some rugby jerseys on Whisper White card stock for the front of the card – and we wrote the names of the people invited on the jerseys.

For the pop up card I cut a 20.5 x 14 cm piece of Stampin Up! Old Olive card stock for the inside ‘pop up’.   Here is a photo of my rough sketch in case my instructions aren’t clear!

I folded the Old Olive piece in half and scored it, then made a 2cm cut at 6 cm and 8cm to make the pop up.

Now for the “field!”

I used my white Signo pen to mark the side lines – 0.5cm all around the inside, and then try lines, centre lines and “22” lines as shown in this photo (I did the solid lines with a ruler and the dashed lines by hand)

I added 2 Stampin’ Dimensionals onto the pop up to hold the “piece de resistance” – the pop up rugby ball!     I made this on my computer so I could add his name on the ball, but you could equally use an oval cut from the extra large oval punch or an ovals die.

James had a fantastic time sticking on the dimensionals and adding the balls to the inside of the cards.   Just like magic!   One tip: make sure the base of the rugby ball is just touching the base of the pop up section so it can close easily.

We wrote the party details on the “field”, stuck the Old Olive insert inside the Night of Navy card base and we were done.

I’m posting them tomorrow so here’s hoping they’re a hit!
